A Vigil for Uselessness/Une veillée pour Inutilité

Candlelight vigils culturally are supposed to reflect the sadness or loss of a horrible event, and at times they can be politically charged. Tonight on the tram home, right on the Place de la Republique in front of a national government building here in Strasbourg, I saw a group of people camping out holding such a vigil, and I asked a fellow passenger about the reason. Today the French National Assembly adopted a bill that would allow same-sex couples to marry and adopt children, and in response many conservatives and traditionalists protested at what they saw as a cultural loss. To be honest though, seeing the vigil made me happy. Perhaps it was a gloating feeling that social reactionaries have once again lost cultural relevance in a changing world, but it was more than that. It was a feeling of hope, that maybe such reactionaries would look at such events and reflect upon the futility of resisting such change. If the bourgeois capitalist state can accept the necessity of social progress for a discriminated minority like the LGBTQ community, perhaps there is hope that society can evolve even more. Of course society will always have those who cannot accept the necessity of such change, and those reactionaries will be buried with the evolution of human society, but perhaps if more reactionaries took the time to hold such vigils that reflect the uselessness of their cause, and even more importantly cause them to reflect, perhaps human society can move forward without the useless ideology of social conservatism.

Les veillées aux chandelles culturellement sont censés refléter la tristesse ou de la perte d'un événement horrible, et parfois ils peuvent être chargés politiquement. Ce soir, sur le chemin du tram, à droite sur la Place de la République en face d'un gouvernement national bâtiment, ici à Strasbourg, j'ai vu un groupe de personnes campent tenue d'une telle veillée, et j'ai demandé à un autre passager sur la raison. Aujourd'hui, l'Assemblée nationale française a adopté un projet de loi qui permettrait aux couples de même sexe de se marier et d'adopter des enfants, et en réponse nombreux conservateurs et traditionalistes protesté contre ce qu'ils considèrent comme une perte culturelle. Pour être honnête, si, en voyant le vigile m'a fait plaisir. Peut-être que c'était un sentiment triomphant qui réactionnaires sociaux ont encore une fois perdu de sa pertinence culturelle dans un monde en mutation, mais c'était plus que ça. C'était un sentiment d'espoir, peut-être que ces réactionnaires se pencherait sur ces événements et de réfléchir sur la futilité de résister à un tel changement. Si l'état de bourgeois capitaliste peut accepter la nécessité du progrès social pour une minorité discriminée comme la communauté LGBTQ, peut-être il ya un espoir que la société puisse évoluer encore plus. Bien sûr, la société aura toujours ceux qui ne peuvent pas accepter la nécessité d'un tel changement, et les réactionnaires seront enterrés avec l'évolution de la société humaine, mais peut-être si d'autres réactionnaires ont pris le temps de tenir de telles veillées qui reflètent l'inutilité de leur cause, et plus important encore les amener à réfléchir, peut-être la société humaine ne peut avancer sans l'idéologie inutile de conservatisme social.
